Singing Studio Classes
Unlock your potential as a singer and unleash your inner performer at The Independent Theatre Workshop. Clonskeagh, Drumcondra and Glenageary.
With a unique approach that places equal emphasis on technique and performance, our singing classes are designed to nurture and develop your musical talents in a supportive and inspiring environment.
We believe in providing tailored instruction to cater to the diverse needs of our students. Our one hour classes take a maximum of 10 Juniors, 6 Inters or 4 Senior students. This setting allows for individual attention while fostering a collaborative and encouraging atmosphere. The more experienced and advanced singers are recommended to take private 30 minute lessons allowing them to fully prepare for Junior and Leaving Cert Practicals, College Auditions and advance exams. Our experienced singing tutors guide students through the fundamentals of singing, building a solid foundation of vocal technique and musical understanding.
We are especially proud of our exam results which are always outstanding - with Clarice Makarevitch winning the Leinster School of Music & Drama All Ireland Excellence Award for Music in 2021 and Matthew Nolan winning it in 2022.
Singing classes are generally taken in addition to the weekly dance and creative drama core subjects, but are offered as a non-member option in selective circumstances.
As students progress and reach higher grades, they are encouraged to take private lessons. This personalized approach enables older students to refine their skills, whether they are preparing for practical exams like the Junior or Leaving Cert, or gearing up for auditions for college programs. Private lessons provide an opportunity for focused coaching and mentorship, tailored to the specific goals and aspirations of each student.
Our singing classes follow a comprehensive curriculum that encompasses classical singing technique, music theory, and performance skills. While the repertoire primarily draws from the rich world of musical theatre, we also explore traditional, classical, and pop genres when appropriate. This diverse range of musical styles broadens students' musical horizons and equips them with versatility as performers.
To ensure a supportive learning environment, students are grouped according to their school class. This allows them to develop friendships and collaborate with peers who are at a similar stage in their musical journey. As students grow older, they have the opportunity to work towards exams with The Leinster School of Music and Drama and the Irish Board of Speech and Drama. These exams provide a detailed assessment of students' musical abilities, including written research, theory, vocal technique, and performance skills.
At The Independent Theatre Workshop, we celebrate our students' progress and achievements by hosting two recitals per year. These recitals serve as a platform for our singing students, ranging from the Junior to Young Adult levels, to showcase their talents and demonstrate the skills they have honed throughout the year. Parents are invited to attend these recitals, offering them a glimpse into the remarkable progress their children have made and the exciting journey they are embarking upon.
Whether you aspire to pursue a career in the performing arts or simply want to explore your passion for singing, The Independent Theatre Workshop provides a nurturing and enriching environment to help you thrive. Join us and discover the joy of singing, the power of performance, and the limitless possibilities that await you on stage.

Some FURTHER INFORMATION ON OUR singing classes
The Exams
Following the syllabus and taking exams have proved to be a fantastic experience for our students: They gain confidence in their own abilities and enjoy having a goal to work towards.
For the Leinster School exams, the students must prepare one or two contrasting songs from musical theatre. These pieces can be performed solo or else students have an option to perform duets. They must perform the songs in a professional manner, adding appropriate choreography and movement where necessary to enhance the performance. They also must study the character from the musical and decide on costume, props and the staging of the piece. In addition they perform a short mime, poem/piece of drama. The students are examined not only on the standard of their performance, but also on their technical understanding of their voices in areas such as vocal support, projection, breath control etc. They are prepared for these exams in singing class.
Leaving Cert / Junior Cert Practical
ITW offer private classes for students preparing for practical music exams as part of the Irish leaving/ junior certificate music syllabi. With a huge range of material to choose from, students are guided in their selection of pieces and coached to bring these pieces to the highest possible standard of performance.
We also have short specialist singing courses throughout the year including Music Theory, Acting the Song, Audition Preparation, workshops with guest teachers and others. Watch our newsletters and website for details.
